 DATE:   March 1998
CONDITIONS:   normal

 VEH#:   AEV-005-redTEST ENGR:   T. Camerom
 INSTRUMENTATION:   Fluke Hydra data logger

TEST TRACK/COURSE:   Test lab / bench

TEST DESCRIPTION:  An AEV s/n AEV-005-red with eight Trojan T-125 six volt batteries was instrumented with the Fluke Hydra data logger to monitor battery pack voltage and current at a rate of three cycles per minute. A complete charge and discharge cycle was logged to establish baseline battery performance characteristics. The batteries were then treated with "Battery Equaliser" 60ml per cell added to the electrolyte. The pack was then cycled through five complete charge / discharge cycles while monitoring voltage and current iver time. The data was compiled and amp-hours were computed. The discharge was completed at a constant current of 75 amps to a 20 percent state of charge. The charge was completed with the on-board Zivan charger.

RESULTS:  The baseline discharge was plotted in (Figure 1) a total of 120 amp-hr was pulled from the batteries when they were taken to 20% SOC. The five discharge cycles after treatment were also logged and plotted in Figures 2 thru 6.

CONCLUSION:  The following table shows the amp-hours discharged for each cycle.

CYCLE
AMP-HOURS
 Baseline120
 1124
 2124
 3130
 4134
 5138

It can be concluded from the discharge curves and the table above the amp-hor capacity of the battery pack was increased when the "Battery Equaliser" was added. After five cycles the capacity was increased from a baseline of 120 amp-hr to 138 amp-hr, an increase of 15 percent. The increase in amp-hr capacity will yield a driving range increase of 15 percent also.

RECOMMENDATIONS:  It is recommended that this battery park be tested again after the battery pack is cycled for 10 more cycles. This data should be added to the results.
